How To Install An RV Air Conditioner

Life on the open road for an RV owner can be exciting and adventurous. Through hot weather and summer months, however, you may need an AC. Whether you need to replace yours or found a better unit, it needs attention.

These are the steps to install an RV AC correctly:

  1. Make ready your RV for installation.
  2. Take out the old AC
  3. Take the new AC onto the roof.
  4. Begin the installation.
  5. Wire in your AC.
  6. Complete the process.

The nature of this job for most is a straightforward process than most can do. Being careful, minimizing tripping hazards, and disconnecting power properly is important.

Here are the detailed steps for installing an RV air conditioner.

Step 1 – Make Ready Your RV For Installation

To make sure your roof is tough enough to withstand you climbing on top of it, place down a few wooden planks. This will take pressure off the roof and place it on the stronger frame. Once this is done, you may also reduce the risk of scratching up your RV’s top.

Step 2 – Take Out The Old AC

With a screwdriver, drill, or wrench, loosen the bolts that your old AC is attached with. The AC is also connected by a wire and needs to be detached to fully remove the unit. With a scraper, you can rid the wire of any glue that keeps it in place.

Make sure you rid the unit and wire of all adhesives and apply new amounts to the new AC. Without doing this properly, your seal may be loose.

Step 3 – Take The New AC Onto The Roof

If you have help, then this stage is easier but doing it alone can work as well. Most ACs are around 60 to 100 pounds, so be careful not to hurt yourself or drop the unit.

If you have access to machinery like a crane, forklift, or something like it, then use that. This stuff is not too common but can make this part of the job simple.

If you have a ladder, try to create a pully system with a rope. One person can pull the unit up while you pull the rope or vice versa.

Always keep the AC in the original packaging and maybe add some bubble wrap in case of a drop. Once it is on the roof and stable, proceed to the next step.

Step 4 – Begin The Installation Process

Slide the new AC in your RV roof’s duct spot as smoothly as you can. If your new AC is larger than your old one, you may have to cut the hole bigger. Adjust this to your AC’s dimensions.

Once you put the gasket in the right place, make sure the AC’s frame is firmly touching the ceiling. Proceed to drill in the four bolts you took out before.

Step 5 – Wire In The New AC

Locate the junction box and follow the color-coded wires to properly attach all connections. The assembly should also have all the necessary screws and nuts to get the job done. Inspect all connections afterward to ensure everything is connected efficiently.

Any loose wires can create hazards and may even start a fire. Make sure you double-check them well.

Step 6 – Complete The Process.

After reattaching all covers, shrouds, and reconnecting the power, you can test your new AC. Try it out on all settings to make sure everything was connected, and the unit was not damaged during installation.

Things To Upkeep Your New RV AC Properly

Here are some tips to keep your new RV AC well-maintained:

  • Always make sure the AC is covered when not turned on. This keeps it clean.
  • Oil your fan routinely to minimize noise and have it run smooth.
  • Open some vents in your RV to get proper airflow. This can also stop your AC from freezing in humid environments.
  • Clean your AC filter once a month and change it completely with a new one annually. This stops clogs and bad air from circulating your RV living space.
  • Thermostats can help to conserve energy and are convenient ways to adjust the temperature. Install one to get the most out of your AC unit.

The Bottom Line

An AC in an RV is quite important for comfort. This is especially true while riding in hot areas or during the summer months.

If you need to replace your AC, then proper installation can mean the difference between safety and harm. Using this simple installation guide, you can efficiently install your new AC with minimal tools.

Once you have installed it properly, make sure to maintain your new until to avoid damage. Doing so will also decrease health risks and keep everyone cool when they need to be.
